PBA Import Highlights: Northport chose an Australian import!

NorthPort has secured the services of Australian basketball player Venky Jois as their import for the upcoming PBA Commissioner's Cup, which will mark the commencement of the league's 48th season on November 5.

Standing at 6-foot-9, Jois started his basketball journey at Eastern Washington University in the US before embarking on a professional career abroad.

Having played in various countries such as Estonia, Croatia, Japan, Germany, New Zealand, Serbia, and Slovenia, the 30-year-old power forward most recently showcased his skills with the North-West Tasmania Thunder in the Australian National Basketball League (NBL).

Jois contributed an impressive average of 16.3 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 2.6 assists during his stint with NW Tasmania in the 2023 NBL season.

NorthPort coach Bonnie Tan lauded their new import as a "team player," emphasizing the collaborative aspect that Jois brings to the team dynamic.

The Batang Pier encountered another disappointing season, recording a dismal 12-22 win-loss record in 2022-23. NorthPort failed to secure a spot in the playoffs during the Philippine Cup and Governors' Cup, tallying a combined 6-16 card across these two conferences.

In the previous season, the Batang Pier managed to secure a playoff spot in the Commissioner's Cup but were swiftly eliminated in the quarterfinals by eventual champions, the Barangay Ginebra Kings.

Venky is an inside operator. Unfortunately for Northport, he is not much of a rim protector. They need rim protection to fortify their defense.
