PBA Controversy: San Miguel is bringing back coach Leo Austria?

Leo Austria is back in an active role with San Miguel after a sabbatical spanning several months. Unfortunately for SMB fans who wanted him back as the head coach, it is only as a team consultant.

The team consultant made a cheerful return to the Beermen for their PBA Season 48 Commissioner’s Cup debut against NLEX. Austria, now 65, expressed gratitude to the management for the opportunity during an encounter in the Ynares Center dugout.

Austria had taken a sabbatical last January, with his long-time deputy, Jorge Gallent, assuming the head coach position. This decision came a month after the 2022 Commissioner’s Cup, where San Miguel lost to guest team Bay Area in the semifinals. Health and safety protocols had caused Austria to miss several games during that conference, with Gallent filling in for him. Gallent continued as head coach into the 2023 Governors’ Cup, where San Miguel got swept by Barangay Ginebra in the best-of-5 semis.

Although not visibly present with the Beermen during the season-ending conference, Austria stayed connected to the game. Besides playing pickup games, he was seen attending the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023. All of this was part of his much-needed break. Austria acknowledged the stress of his nine-year coaching tenure, including the challenging two years of the pandemic. He emphasized the importance of his recharge period, spending time with family and relatives.

Austria's return was officialized after a phone call from SMC sports director Alfrancis Chua during the PBA Season 48 Rookie Draft Combine in September. Since November 3, he has actively participated in team practices and, starting with the NLEX game, is a regular presence on the sidelines during matches. Reflecting on his conversation with Coach Al, Austria shared the positive mood and mutual understanding about his return to contribute to the team and coaching staff.
