UAAP Controversy: Ateneo head coach is leaving?

The UAAP men’s basketball finals have always been a spectacle to behold, and for years, coach Tab Baldwin has been at the helm of Ateneo, leading the team to consecutive finals appearances. However, this streak was recently broken, leading to a wave of speculation and introspection.

The Aftermath of the Loss

Following the loss, Baldwin sought solace in an unusual place. “After hearing mass, my coaches and I went to restaurant to assess our season and do some armchair analysis. It was difficult but cathartic,” he shared in a telephone interview. Despite the disappointment, Baldwin showed resilience, even watching game film of his team’s demise against UP until the early hours of the morning.

The Game Analysis

Baldwin acknowledged the strength of UP’s defense, which caused many broken plays and took away most of Ateneo’s post action. He also pointed out the blunt force trauma in the rebounding department, with UP outrebounding Ateneo, 60-43. These factors, combined with Ateneo’s poor shooting from the three-point line, contributed to the team’s downfall.

The Future Plans

Despite the setback, Baldwin is already plotting for the next season. He plans to go on a holiday break and then embark on a recruiting trip to the United States with team manager Epok Quimpo. This shows his commitment to the team and his determination to bounce back stronger. Although, people have been talking about a rumored offer from Indonesia.

The Speculations and Clarifications

In the wake of the loss, many people asked Baldwin if he was leaving Ateneo. To this, he responded, “I’ve been approached by overseas interests but I didn’t entertain any mid-season move. The focus was solely on Ateneo.” He further clarified that he has one more year left in his contract and he intends to honor that.

The Questionable Honor

However, recent happenings in the UAAP cast a shadow over Baldwin’s words. In the world of sports, contracts can be negotiated, and someone can move. While Baldwin’s commitment to Ateneo is commendable, it’s worth noting that actions speak louder than words. His future actions will determine whether his words hold true.

While Baldwin’s dedication to Ateneo is evident, recent events in the UAAP suggest that his words may be less honorable than they appear.
