Gilas Controversy: Ginebra head coach is NOT the right choice as permanent head coach?

In the coming week, the Samahang Basketbol Ng Pilipinas (SBP) is expected to announce a new head coach for Gilas Pilipinas for the next Fiba cycle. Multiple sources indicate that Tim Cone, a name synonymous with success in Philippine basketball, is the chosen one. Once he formally assumes the position, Cone will also be given the autonomy to select a team manager to replace the retired Butch Antonio.

There’s no denying that Cone is an exceptional coach. His record speaks volumes, and his name is often associated with coaching excellence in the PBA. However, some argue that he may not be the best fit to lead Gilas. This perspective, while valid, warrants a deeper examination.

Cone’s prowess is undisputed in the realm of the Asian Games, a regional event that the SBP often highlights. However, coaching at the Fiba windows and Olympic levels is a different ball game. Cone, known for his intellectual acumen, is well aware of the challenges that come with navigating this unfamiliar terrain.

Here is the number 1 reason why coach Tim Cone may not be the right guy for the job! In a previous statement, Cone expressed his willingness to assist Gilas in any capacity other than as head coach, citing his commitment to Ginebra. However, it appears that he has since reconsidered his stance. The question then arises: why does the SBP persist in promoting Cone for the role, despite his initial reluctance?

The answer lies in Cone’s appeal. He is popular among fans and acceptable to both the MVP and SMC sides. In other words, his appointment seems to be more of a political move than a logical one. But is this fair to Cone, and more importantly, is it in the best interest of Gilas?

Contrary to the prevailing sentiment, Cone may indeed be the best candidate for the job, considering all factors. His vast experience, tactical acumen, and proven track record make him a strong contender. The real question is whether Ginebra is willing to make the necessary sacrifices to maximize Cone’s appointment.

While there are other experienced coaches like Will Voigt and Brian Goorjian who could potentially lead Gilas, none of them resonate with the masses and the shareholders the way Cone does. This doesn’t necessarily mean they are less qualified, but rather highlights the influence of popularity in decision-making.

In conclusion, while the search for a new Gilas coach has been fraught with controversy, it’s crucial to look beyond the surface. Cone’s potential appointment should not be dismissed outright, nor should he be made a scapegoat for systemic issues.

Instead, his candidacy should be evaluated based on his merits, with a clear understanding of the challenges and expectations of the role. After all, the future of Gilas Pilipinas depends on it.
