Gilas Controversy: Ginebra head coach is NOT the right choice as permanent head coach?

 

In the coming week, the Samahang Basketbol Ng Pilipinas (SBP) is expected to announce a new head coach for Gilas Pilipinas for the next Fiba cycle. Multiple sources indicate that Tim Cone, a name synonymous with success in Philippine basketball, is the chosen one. Once he formally assumes the position, Cone will also be given the autonomy to select a team manager to replace the retired Butch Antonio.

There’s no denying that Cone is an exceptional coach. His record speaks volumes, and his name is often associated with coaching excellence in the PBA. However, some argue that he may not be the best fit to lead Gilas. This perspective, while valid, warrants a deeper examination.

Cone’s prowess is undisputed in the realm of the Asian Games, a regional event that the SBP often highlights. However, coaching at the Fiba windows and Olympic levels is a different ball game.
