Dwight Howard, the former NBA star, has agreed to play for the Philippine team, Strong Group. This has sparked speculation about the possibility of him joining the PBA. While it’s a challenging prospect, it’s not entirely out of the question.
Jacob Lao, a scion of the Strong Group and the team manager of Converge FiberXers in the pro league, could be a key figure in this potential move. However, there’s a hurdle to overcome. The PBA would need to revert to its old height ceiling of 6’10” for imports to accommodate Howard, the 2008 NBA Slam Dunk champion and eight-time All-Star. Currently, the height limit is set at 6’9”.
Despite these challenges, Lao has expressed a willingness to explore the possibility of bringing Howard to Converge. Interestingly, Howard’s 6’10” height is measured with shoes, while the PBA measures players without shoes. This could potentially open a door for Howard’s inclusion.
The timing for Converge could be perfect. They are set to get a high pick in the next draft, and their current young players, such as Deschon Winston and Justin Arana, are expected to improve significantly. This could make the next season an ideal time for Howard to join the team, should the opportunity arise.
Lao and the Strong Group team have a history of working with high-caliber imports, having previously brought in Shabazz Muhammad and Nick Young, both former NBA starters. This experience could prove beneficial in their potential pursuit of Howard. However, as with all things, only time will tell.
