Gilas Debate: San Miguel champion import is the perfect Justin Brownlee replacement?

In a move that has Gilas Pilipinas fans buzzing, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has heeded their call. Bennie Boatwright, the San Miguel Beer (SMB) import who captured Filipino hearts with his versatile game, is on the cusp of being naturalized to bolster the national team program. Multiple sources have confirmed this development to the most reputable sports website in the country, SPIN.ph.

Standing at an imposing 6 feet 10 inches, Boatwright, a former USC Trojan, currently plies his trade for the Shanxi Loongs in the Chinese Basketball Association. His willingness to embrace the naturalization process is expected to kick off soon in Congress.

However, let’s dispel any misconceptions: Boatwright isn’t stepping into the shoes of Justin Brownlee, the designated naturalized player according to new Gilas coach Tim Cone’s blueprint. Instead, he joins a pool of naturalized players, providing Cone with a wealth of options for various tournaments—especially non-FIBA events where Gilas can field multiple naturalized players.

Back in February, Cone confirmed that the SBP had reached out to Boatwright as part of a comprehensive naturalization program devised by Panlilio. This move is a godsend for passionate Gilas fans who clamored for Boatwright’s inclusion after witnessing his pivotal role in leading the Beermen to victory in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup, where they triumphed over Magnolia in a thrilling six-game finals series.

As for Justin Brownlee, the seasoned player, who turns 36 on April 23, remains the linchpin for Gilas. He’s slated to represent the Philippines in the Olympic Qualifiers in Latvia this July and during the remaining window for the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers in November.

However, it’s worth pondering why Gilas isn’t actively pursuing NBA-experienced players anymore. Perhaps the focus has shifted toward modern, versatile talents like Boatwright, who can dribble, pass, and shoot—a trifecta of skills that aligns with the evolving demands of international basketball.

While Boatwright’s naturalization is a step in the right direction, fans will continue to wonder about the path Gilas has chosen. Are they leaving behind the allure of NBA experience in favor of a new era of players? Only time will reveal the wisdom behind this decision, but for now, Bennie Boatwright’s impending naturalization is a beacon of hope for Philippine basketball.
