According to veteran PBA insider Snow Badua, the San Miguel Beermen are looking to acquire Kemark Cariño and Louie Sangalang from Terrafirma in exchange for Moala Tautuaa. While Tautuaa is undoubtedly the most accomplished player in this trade, the deal heavily favors San Miguel, primarily because of the significant age gap between the key players involved.
Why San Miguel Clearly Wins
Tautuaa, at 34 years old, remains a strong presence in the PBA. However, Cariño is just 26, making him eight years younger with plenty of room to develop. Even if we acknowledge that Tautuaa is the better player right now, the sheer difference in age makes this deal questionable for Terrafirma.
In addition, Sangalang is another promising frontcourt piece who provides solid rebounding and hustle plays. Giving up two young bigs for an aging center who may only have a few prime years left does not seem like a wise move for a rebuilding team like Terrafirma.
What Terrafirma Should Demand
If Terrafirma is serious about acquiring Tautuaa, they should negotiate for more assets from San Miguel—perhaps a draft pick or a young guard to make the deal more balanced. Otherwise, they risk trading away two young potential building blocks for a short-term upgrade that doesn’t align with their long-term plans.
Unless Terrafirma gets more out of this deal, it’s hard to justify giving up Cariño and Sangalang for Tautuaa alone. Right now, this trade is a clear win for San Miguel and another questionable decision for a Terrafirma team that has a history of lopsided trades.
