Globalport is easily one, if not the most disappointing team this season. It is just hard to accept that a team with two of the top 10 players in the league cannot even reached the semifinals, once.
Or to be more specific, a team with an 18.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 48.5% FG and 39.1% 3FG stat-filling star and an ace player that contributed 23.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 36.5% 3FG per game failed to reached the semifinals!
The blame should not be put on the two stars because their production speak for themselves. I think the problem is no other than coach Franz Pumaren.
It seems like coach Franz Pumaren's system is not the right fit for a powerhouse offensive backcourt. Actually, coach Franz did not really install the system that he was known for. It seems like he adjusted too much, trying to fit the star duo.
One of the staple of coach Franz is pressuring defense. Unfortunately, Globalport was never in the upper half of the three conferences in terms of forcing turnovers. He do not want to sucked the energy of his duo in defense.
In offense, Offensive Rating will tell a general story. In the Philippine Cup, they have the 2nd best but they fell to the #6 in the two import conferences. My problem with that is the fact that coach Franz is in control with the players that he is surrounding his tantalizing backcourt.
He can target the type of players that he believes can sync properly with his system and with Pringle and Romeo. Unfortunately, he failed to do so.
Lastly, I saw enough of their games to say that the offensive system itself is not as dynamic as it should be. I don't know why almost all the Globalport coaches of the Pringle-Romeo era made it a per turn system between the two!
That is not the right way to play them. A dynamic system that flows through them, using different decoy movements should have catapulted Globalport into the elite status.
Actually, it was hard to believed that no coach had tried to make a pick and roll between the two, a staple of their offense! With a lob-catcher inside and two shooters in the wing, that pick-and-roll could be the most unstoppable pick-and-roll in the whole league!
They can easily run that ten times a game and expect around 14 points out of it!
Just for the record, I am not saying that coach Franz is a bad coach. I just don't think he is the right coach for Globalport.
