17-18 Rookie Power Ranking 1.0: A Monster at the Top

The 2017 batch was a top-heavy draft and with more than a month of competition, that is turning out to be true.

We are still waiting for the arrival of Christian Standhardinger, who will surely push the ceiling of this class. Even without him though, Ravena, and Teng had been showing a lot of promise.

So, how do we rank the draft class now in terms of Current Impact and Potential, after more than a month of competition?

Here it is.

#10 Sidney Onwubere
Potential: 11
Current Impact: 6

I really thought TNT can give him more minutes than what he is getting right now. Unfortunately, his current play is not encouraging coach Nash to extend his time on the floor.

#9 Jon Jon Gabriel
Potential: 11
Current Impact: 7

When he was finally given the chance to play and show what he got, Gabriel delivered with 13 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals. He even connected on one of his two long bomb attempts. If that play is sustainable, Gabriel's ceiling is much higher than what we expect.

#8 Raymar Jose
Potential: 11
Current Impact: 9

As expected, Jose is having a hard time scoring against the experience and physical bigs of the PBA. Jose is only shooting 39% in the field and I did not see any excellent post move from him.

#7 Robert Herndon
Potential: 12
Current Impact: 8

The size, athleticism and explosiveness are easy to see. Unfortunately, his shot is not falling. The worst thing so far, is his inability to make the right decisions on the court. His veteran teammates could help him a lot.

#6 Joseph Gabayni
Potential: 13
Current Impact: 9

The biggest revelation, so far. Gabayni is producing 4.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and shooting 50% FG. What I love about him is his composure. The way he handled Fajardo was very mature and he was even successful in stopping The Kraken.

#5 Rey Nambatac
Potential: 12
Current Impact: 11

The hype about his rebounding is being fulfilled. His shooting though is exceeding expectations. Rey is grabbing 5.0 rebounds per game. Elite for a guard. His 60% from the arc is also elite. It is doubtful if he can sustain his shooting, but if that will only go down to around 38%, that is still excellent.

#4 Jason Perkins
Potential: 12
Current Impact: 12

The trust that coach Alas gave to him is being answered, positively. He is more athletic than what I expected, so he was more capable of playing the SF position. Unfortunately, his shooting still needs a lot of work and his defensive tendencies are still bad.

#3 Kiefer Ravena
Potential: 14
Current Impact: 13

With his explosions, NLEX is now running their offense through him. 17.7 points, 3.2 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 2.0 steals and 49% FG per game is his current production. Yes, that is a Star-caliber line and yes, Kiefer is already a star.

#2 Jeron Teng
Potential: 15
Current Impact: 13

Even though the numbers of Ravena is more pleasing than the 15.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 48% FG and 36% 3FG of Teng, I think their current impact is at the same level. It is now clearer that the potential of Teng is a level higher than that of Ravena. His size and the form of his outside shot are legit signs.

#1 Christian Standhardinger
Potential: 15
Current Impact: 15

Yeah. He is not playing in the PBA, but the guy is making a mark on the Asean Basketball League. He is putting up 24.4 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 2.3 steals and 54% FG per game. Yes, he is already putting Kraken numbers and that is against foreign imports. Hard to imagine how unstoppable the CS-Kraken combo will be.
