The Most Valuable Player award is the most coveted plum for all the players in the PBA. Championship is the goal, but deep down in them, they are dying to be called the most valuable player in a season.
So, who are the top 10 candidates for the award so far? Let us take a look.
#10 Jayson Castro
The Blur is not the point-god that we used to know. He is deferring more to his young teammates, who will eventually takeover from him. 14.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 6.0 assists is not that bad for a regression.
#9 JP Erram
The Elite is really close to becoming an elite team. The key will be their unmovable object, JP Erram. Erram is their answer to the giants of the nation and he is playing well. 13.8 points and 10.0 rebounds is just very good, but his 3.6 blocks per game is superb. The amazing thing about it, is the fact that he blocked two or more shots in each game.
#8 Alex Cabagnot
So what if he is playing with the reigning Most Valuable Player of the league? His statline deserves some attention, too. Cabagnot is not having a very efficient season, but 19.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists are excellent numbers.
#7 Troy Rosario
Are you listening to what I am trying to tell you? Yes. Rosario is now the best player in the TNT nation. He still needs to learn a lot, to be a more rounded player, but his 15.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game is comparable to other bigs. His 46% shooting from the outside, makes him unique.
#6 Greg Slaughter
Height is might in basketball. Slaughter is the biggest evidence. He continues to be a huge magnet on their offense, that he makes the life of his teammates, much more easier. On defense, nobody is scoring on him at the rim in back to back plays.
#5 Paul Lee
Lee could be having his best season in the PBA. He is pouring 20.0 points per game, in a very efficient way. 53% from the field and 51% from beyond the arc. His outside shooting is on a level of his own, because he unloaded 18 threes in just five games. Nobody expect him to keep that up, so 3.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists will help his team a lot.
#4 Sean Anthony
Who needs Terrence Romeo if Sean Anthony is back to his better-than-Abueva persona? The guy had been showing elite performances in almost all the primary skills, pushing his averages to 18.3 points, 9.5 rebounds, 5,8 assists.
Efficiency? The guy is shooting 44% from beyond the arc. Defense? He stole 10 balls in their first four games. If Anthony continue this kind-of-havoc, he deserves all your attention.
#3 Kiefer Ravena
Once in a while, some amateur players will enter the league and play like an ace player, right away. Ravena is doing that with his 18.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 7.0 assists production. And remember the "buwaya" criticism about him? How about that assists average and his 50% shooting on the field.
#2 June Mar Fajardo
Am I willing to bet that The Kraken will loss his MVP crown this season? No. But so far, he is not the Most Valuable Player in the league. 23.5 points in 67% FG shooting is so elite that, that alone should keep him on the MVP conversation.
Add his 9.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game and you will ask yourself, who could be the better candidate?
#1 Stanley Pringle
No Terrence Romeo? Okay, Pringle put his cape and do the cooking. How can you not put him at top spot if he is yielding 25.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game. He is the top scorer in the league and his rebounding and passing numbers are both on the top 10.
Don't worry, the guy is not over-shooting. He is knocking down 48% of his shots on the field and 44% from beyond the arc. He has carried his team to a 2-2 slate. So, if we award an MVP today, this is my guy.
