Did you make your new year's resolution for 2018? Is it reducing your weight, studying more and etc?
For PBA teams, it is a chance to do something new to have a better year. The conference just started but the ranking of teams are already obvious.
So, what can each team do to have a much fruitful year?
MAGNOLIA HOTSHOTS - Trade PJ Simon
I am ready to received a lot of backslash from this but I will not suggest this if Star did not trade the much bigger and much marketable star in James Yap.
The time has come to unload another big name for a more stable present and a brighter future. the arrival of Robbie Herndon improved the depth of Magnolia, to the point that they can unload one.
The young franchises like Blackwater and Phoenix will surely grab the opportunity to get a veteran like PJ. If they can grab a quality big and a pick for him, that will be a huge return.
NLEX ROAD WARRIORS - More playing time for Rabeh and Kiefer, together
Ravena has a blazing start to his career. He unloaded 38 points, 9 rebounds, 17 assists, 6 steals and 55.6% FG in his first two games. One of the combo that could be fascinating to groom is him and Rabeh.
Rabeh is still engraved below the rim and fortunately, Kiefer is the master of dropping passes inside, when he drive to the basket. I am hoping to see coach Yeng try to mold them into an unstoppable offensive duo.
PHOENIX FUEL MASTERS - Get a center
Doug Kramer, Justin Chua, Jason Perkins, Willy Wilson and JC Intal will not cut it as the frontline depth of a semifinal squad. So, if Phoenix is really aiming for much higher, they badly need a good center.
The size alone makes that depth underwhelming. That depth will not be able to hold the fort against the Beermen and Ginebra of the league.
Consider also the fact that none of them is athletic. Reducing their effectiveness on the defensive end.
So, trading for an athletic center could be a huge addition for the Fuel Masters.
RAIN OR SHINE ELASTO PAINTERS - More minutes for Chris Tiu
One of the guys that we have forgotten is Chris Tiu. Even with his showbiz endeavors, his playing style has stalled him on the minds of the PBA fans.
Fortunately, he has more edge this season. He proclaimed that he is ready to assert himself more, on the offensive end. In their first two games, he made 13.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 21.3 minutes.
His best case is his 5 out of 8 from the three-point line. In the last two seasons, Tiu shot better than 36%, which is above-average in the PBA.
SAN MIGUEL BEERMEN - Stop thinking about Standhardinger
The play of Christian Standhardinger in the ABL is so good that I don't blame the Beermen for salivating for him to arrive.
For the sake of their defense of the crown, they better stop thinking about that. It is not as if they will not reach the semifinals without him but the small details could be missed if they put too much focuse on his arrival.
TNT KA-TROPA - Unleash Moala Tautuaa
I still believe that Moala Tautuaa still has the biggest untapped potential in the PBA. I don't have a doubt that the tools of Moala is way higher than Christian Standhardinger.
In their first two games, he averaged 10.0 points and 8.5 rebounds. That is not mind-blowing but he is looking better inside the court. I am still hoping that they can play more pick and roll between Moala and Castro.
The small glimpses that I saw from that play was devastating. The speed and the power of Moala is not that easy to stop.
