It seems like Kia is not yet done. In a small move, that looks harmless at first, Kia was able to help out the injury-riddled Ginebra San Miguel.
Kia relegated Prince Caperal to unrestricted free-agency and Ginebra was the quickest to sign him up.
The reason why Kia let him go was to give the roster spot to the returning Russell Escoto. Escoto deserves to be added back into the roster, but to choose Caperal as the sacrificial lamb was idiotic.
Prince has not been productive in his first three seasons in the league, but will you give-up on him even though you know that his size of 6'7 is still a rarity in the league?
Caperal is already in his fourth season, but mind you, the guy is only 24 years old! Yes, he is even younger than a lot of the rookies today!
So, you will choose Jan Jamon and the Roider Cabrera of Philippine basketball over that guy? Seriously?
And when you inspect their roster, Caperal is their tallest bigman and without him, their frontline rotation is down to Yee, Khobuntin, Gabriel and Cabrera! That could not even be the best frontline in the D-League.
What they did may look like a minor move from the outside, but if you dissect their current team situation, it was a major decision that will surely lead to a darker future.
GINEBRA
Prince Caperal will inject the much needed size, that Ginebra needs with the injury problem of Greg Slaughter and Joe Devance, who could miss the entire Philippine Cup.
Caperal doesn't have the skills to back-up his size, but he can develop into something worth it. With coach Tim Cone, we can expect Prince to find his niche and help Ginebra get another chance on the Philippine Cup title.
