Remember the moment when Ginebra drafted Greg Slaughter? Ginebra was proclaimed as a contender, right away.
That is the price of getting the tallest player in the league. That contendership was finally fulfilled, when coach Tim Cone arrived. The irony was, Greg Slaughter was not a vital part of their success.
Of course, the biggest exhibit was the success of the 2016 Ginebra team in the 2016 Governors' Cup, without Slaughter.
And last Tuesday, they defeated San Miguel without the Gregzilla. Actually, they should be up, 2-1 now, if Ginebra just executed well in the crunchtime in Game 2.
Is that enough to let go of Greg?
Of course no.
But, if you add the fact that he has been joggling with injuries all throughout his career, this could be the best time to let him go.
The guy is not playing the semis because of injury. He missed four games in the elimination because of injury. And he will surely miss more in the future.
So, what is the point of holding into a very impactful player, if the chance of him not playing crucial games, is really high?
And consider the fact that Japeth Aguilar is starting to learn to live and feed without him. Japeth is the 3rd best scorer this season, and the total production is 19.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.4 blocks.
And there are two more bigs that are showing up some desirable skills. The first one is Raymond Aguilar. A legit stretch-big, who can also be physical inside.
And of course, Prince Caperal. Caperal has been a steady partner for Japeth Aguilar. He is producing 19 points, 6 rebounds and he even hit 3 long bombs already, in their last two semifinals game.
If you combine all of those things, that should be enough reason to trade Greg. Right?
