With three conferences to play, we expect some surprises once in a while with our league leaders. These are the guys that you never expected to be that high in the leaderboard.
Let us start.
Chris Banchero - #2 in Assists
Remember Chris Banchero? The good looking guard that we never expected to be this good. Chris has supplanted Jayvee Casio as the main point guard of Alaska. He is now tallying 6.4 assists per game.
Banchero's main weapon is his fearlessness of driving to the basket. By being ferocious, he creates good shots for his teammates. By being an attacker from the beginning of his career, his experience in drives and playmaking became deeper and deeper and he is now applying that this conference.
Mark Barroca and Jio Jalalon - Top 1 in steals
Being feisty and grinding had been the hallmark of the defense of the guards of Magnolia. They have now created the most destructive perimeter duo in Barroca and Jalalon. Both petite guards are stealing the ball, 2.3 times per game!
That means they are providing 4.6 extra possessions to their team and completely shutting down the offense of their opponent. That may sound small to you but if you do the math, it is meaningful. Example, Magnolia and their opponent are scoring 0.85 per possession.
On defense, they are saving 3.9 points and on offense, they are adding 3.9 points. Overall, they provided 7.8 points to their team! That is a huge difference in basketball.
Sean Anthony - #2 in rebounds
Sean Anthony is having a hell of a season. He is basically a top 5 players this conference! Yes, better than the Terrence Romeo, LA Tenorio, Arwind Santos and etc. And one of his bread and butter is his rebounding.
He is grabbing 10.3 boards per game. That is the second-best mark in terms of locals. That is higher than Scottie Thompson, Calvin Abueva, and Greg Slaughter. What makes Sean a great rebounder is his quickness and ferocity in grabbing balls that are up on the air.
In short, it is not about skills but more of his mentality and grinds!
