This season's Governors' Cup could be a little bit different. Some newbies are challenging them for the top spots.
#10 Akeem Wright
Akeen Wright has pretty good averages of 25.6 points, 12.6 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game. What do you expect from the import who is leading the worst team in the league? His 39% FG, 33% 3FG and 53% FT exhibits big holes in his game.
#9 Mike Harris
Alaska is in a dilemma. They are winning with Mike Harris but his performance is way below than that of his compatriots. Harris is producing 21.3 points, 17.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 48% FG and 29% 3FG per game. His rebounding has been his lone elite skill in their first four games.
#8 Rashad Woods
Without Stanley Pringle and Sean Anthony in his sides, Woods struggled to carry Northport. In their last game against Ginebra where the three of them were finally together, he manufactured 28 points, 40% FG, 11 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 turnovers and 2 steals. That is not good enough.
#7 Romeo Travis
Magnolia is playing excellent team ball. That pushed Travis out of the spotlight and played like a role player. He tallied 18.0 points, 17.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 4.5 steals and 33% FG per game. He is one of the best defenders in the league but Magnolia also need offense from him.
#6 Arizona Reid
San Miguel Beermen doesn't need a player who will take a lot of shots from the elite locals of San Miguel. It seems like I do not have the same line of thinking with coach Leo Austria. Reid is producing 28.0 points, 12.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 5.0 turnovers, 4.0 fouls and 46% FG per game. Reid is much wilder than necessary.
#5 Henry Walker
Walker is still the bucket-getter that he used to be. He is manufacturing 29.0 points, 15.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.0 blocks, 49% FG and 14% 3FG per game. He did not crack the top 4 because the guys up there have shown more capabilities and consistency.
#4 Allen Durnham
The overall statline of Durnham is still worthy of his The Hulk monicker. He is averaging 24.7 points, 17.7 rebounds, 7.0 assists and even 57% 3FG per game. But in reality, his post scoring may be much easier to defend because of the availability of scouting materials against him.
#3 Justin Brownlee
Scoring wise, Brownlee is as monstrous as ever. His overall statline is 35.3 points, 13.0 rebounds, 7.3 assists, 54% FG and 50% 3FG per game. His pull-up ability in the midrange makes him capable of scoring anywhere in the court. He also has the first step and strength to reach the rim, anytime he wants.
#2 Eugene Phelps
Just like Brownlee, Phelps has been unstoppable in the last three years. He has one of the most evasive handles that I have seen in the PBA. He is also strong and athletic which made getting to the rim like a walk in the park for him. His defense though has catch-up with the quality of his offense. He is the current leader in blocking with 3.5 per game. Overall, he is tallying 30.5 points, 16.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 51% FG per game.
#1 Aaron Fuller
Out of all the performances of the imports so far, I think Fuller has been the most foolproof. He did everything in his first two games other than hit a three. He rebounded well, made plays for his teammates, protected the rim and was sureball inside. Those are evident with his 35.5 points, 18.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists, 51% FG, 1.5 steals, 1.0 block and 1.5 turnovers per game.
You cannot ask for more when your import is producing monster numbers and he only made 3 turnovers in two games.
