Before Fajardo, the same hype was given to Japeth Aguilar. An athletic giant who played the majority of his college ball in the United States.
But the fantasy did not become our reality. Aguilar never reached the peak that we saw. We never saw the player that can anchor the offensive and defensive end of the court.
Nine years into his PBA career, Aguilar may have found his niche.
Their game against Northport showcased the impact of Japeth when he focused on utilizing the two tools that made him special. His jumping prowess and his agility.
In that encounter against Batang Pier, he managed 23 points, 11/16 FG, 9 rebounds and 2 assists.
He was in-focus all throughout the game and he even made the winning plays at the end. How did he do that?
Simple. He focuses on filling up gaps and open lanes. With his length and speed, he easily reached the open spots and when the ball found him, the shots were easily made.

He also applied that in getting 2nd chance opportunities. In this conference, he averaged 3.7 offensive rebounds per game!
I believe, if he sustains his new style, we may see the late rise of the former King Eagle. The next step should be to learn how to anchor the defense.
If he will also get that, with the help of coach Tim Cone, he could be the challenger that Fajardo has been waiting for.
