According to a tweet from Nelson Beltran of Philippine Star, the team governor of Columbian Dyip stated that they are planning to draft CJ and they will keep him.
This is a bold announcement because they are picking CJ Perez over Bobby Ray Parks.
Parks has not applied for the PBA draft but he still has a month left to think about it because the deadline is set on December 3, 2018.
So, why is it smart to draft Perez over Parks?
It is because of the news in the past that Parks wants to play for Ginebra. I am pretty sure Ginebra also wants him and knowing the connection of Columbian to the SMC conglomerate, a trade will surely happen.
By not drafting him, they will not get the heat because they will not be the one to trade him to Ginebra.
CJ Perez is also more loved by the PBA masses more than Parks. Perez' brand of basketball is an embodiment of the Filipino brand. Perez could be the key to turning around the image of their franchise.
It is also wise to announce it this early. First, if they managed to keep Perez for the next season, they can return to this statement and proved their legitimacy.
Second, by announcing their pick and stating that they will keep him, that can limit the talk of them trading the pick.
