After their last game this season, coach Johnedel Cardel was put on the spotlight about the plans of Columbian Dyip for the upcoming draft.
He provided the following statement.
"Number one pick kami di ba? Tapos tinitignan namin big man kasi wala kami... Kailangan ‘yung makakatulong sa team namin. Kailangan namin ng energy guy, tapos he can defend, tapos trapping defense, gusto namin mabilis ang laro... Depends na lang sa boss namin, after one week mag-uusap kami kung sino makukuha na top pick. Kinakailangan wag masayang para walang magulo sa team namin."
The first one was the scariest. It was not clear if he was talking about the #1 pick or their later picks of SMB's 1st round pick and their own 2nd round pick.
If they are talking about the #1 pick. They better not do it or else the whole PBA universe will laugh on their franchise that may have negative marketing implications.
Remember the guy that they let go in the 2017 draft? Yes. Christian Standhardinger. The guy who is arguably the 2nd best center and even the 2nd best player in the league today.
If they will now preach about their need of a big, it will just sink them to the pit that they created in that 2017 draft.
Even the last two statements are providing a glimpse about their plan of not drafting Bobby Ray Parks.
If we are talking about energy, speed and defense, that guy is not Bobby Ray Parks. Parks is more of a control the tempo guy who will win possessions with his brilliance and elite skills.
So who could be the guy? CJ Perez. The Baby Beast of Lyceum Pirates.
He plays with the same intensity and speed of a Calvin Abueva. But on the defensive end, Perez could even be more maniacal. He averaged 3.4 steals per game in the on-going NCAA season. A perfect guy for trapping defense.
If they decide to pick Perez, I think the decision is reasonable and will be accepted by the PBA universe. Unless, Perez will also find his way to another team.
