2019 Breakout Candidates: #10 to #6

(c) PBA Media Bureau

If you are a fan of any PBA team, I am pretty sure you are always dreaming for one or two of their players to break out and get into another level.

Last season, we saw Vic Manuel and Chris Banchero solidify their duo as the foundation of Alaska. Baser Amer corrected his subpar sophomore season and Rashawn McCarthy and Jerramy King revealed themselves as the saving grace of the Columbian franchise.

This season, who are our ten best candidates?

#10 Russell Escoto
The rookie season of Escoto ended early because of an injury. 2018 was basically his rookie season and he showed enough flashes to crave for more in 2019. With his ability to hit threes, Escoto just needs to expand the other areas of his game.

#9 Jackson Corpuz
I am pretty sure you already heard about Jerramy King and Rashawn McCarthy. One guy that has been overshadowed by the duo was Corpuz. He exploded for 11.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 60% FG per game in the 2018 Governors Cup.

#8 Robbie Herndon
I have been a big believer of Herndon starting from his amateur days. With his physique, athleticism and grit, he has a high potential. They have been trying him at the 4 position and he was fine. With his defense and position versatility, I expect him to force his way to more minutes in the upcoming season.

#7 JP Erram
This was the breakout season of Erram. But, he has already shown enough for me to believe that he can still go one level higher. Yes, he can reach the status of the Fajardos and Standhardinger of the PBA Universe.

And there is no better coach to guide him that coach Yeng Guiao.

#6 Calvin Abueva
Abueva entered the league swinging. But he did not solidify himself as one of the top 5 players in the league. Now that he is much happier and content with the Phoenix Fuel Masters, it seems like next, he will finally arrive.

In the Governors Cup, his first conference with Phoenix, he manufactured 15.4 points, 9.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.3 blocks, 46% FG and 39% 3FG per game. If his accuracy from the outside and his scoring are sustainable, Abueva could be a challenger for the MVP award.
