Ginebra just finalized the roster that they will use to begin the 2019 season of the Philippine Basketball Association.
Two moves were settled this week.
Signed Teytey Teodoro
The former Jose Rizal University stud impressed coach Tim Cone that coach Tim offered a one-conference deal to Teytey. Teytey immediately signed and expressed his excitement of playing for the most popular ballclub in the country.
Coach Tim said that Teodoro has legit point guard skills and the only questionable part of his game is his defense. Coach Tim even went so far as comparing Teytey to Willie Miller.
The reasoning behind the signing is pretty obvious. Jett Manuel just retired, leaving a roster spot open. Julian Sargent and Jeff Chan are scheduled to miss several games in the upcoming conference because of injuries.
Thus, they need another body to fill up minutes.
Coach Tim was right on point by focusing on Teytey's defense as the one that will determine his longevity with the team.
Did not sign Matt Salem
Ginebra ended up as one of the winners in the 2018 draft because Salem fell into their laps. Unfortunately, they do not have the roster spot for him.
According to Matt, the offer from Ginebra was a one-year contract as a practice player. Matt politely declined, because of the depth of Ginebra, which limits his chances of cracking it.
Thus, he ended up with the Blackwater Elite who needs him more.
In a way, Ginebra chose Teodoro over Salem.
I do not think I will agree with that decision, 100%.
Yes, they need a point guard more than a forward but in terms of ceiling and comparing the skill-sets of the two rookies, Salem should have been the choice.
Remember that in the latter two-conferences, back-up point guards are not that of a need for Ginebra because Brownlee will do the playmaking most of the time. Even LA Tenorio plays off-the-ball a lot in the Commissioner's Cup and Governors Cup.
In short, Blackwater may have gotten a steal in free agency.
