To finish off our Top Trade Assets article series, we will now talk about Ginebra, Columbian, Meralco and NLEX.
Who is the player of each team that will give them the best return package, possible?
Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel - Japeth Aguilar
It is easy to fall for the marketability and youth of Scottie Thompson. But, the management of the other teams will surely realize that a top 5 bigman in the league is more important than a top 5 guard. Thus, if both Scottie and Japeth are available, I can see more teams paying more for Aguilar.
Do not get me wrong, Scottie is a phenomenal and a unique weapon for a guard. He will surely be the top trade asset for more than half of the teams in the league. But not in a team with a Japeth who is actually improving every season under coach Tim Cone.
Columbian - CJ Perez
This is an easy call. CJ Perez can still bring back a package, worthy of a top pick after an admirable showing in his first conference. He averaged 16.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Actually, Dyip has other viable trade options already in Rashawn McCarthy and Jerramy King.
Meralco - Chris Newsome
This exercise made me realize how bad the current roster of Meralco Bolts. They have too many guards but none of them are actually elite, although a lot of them are average players. Their wing position is full of credible players but can be exploited in terms of matches. And I think their frontline is at least one of the two weakest in the league.
Chris Newsome is easily their top trade asset, although he is criminally underrated. Newsome and Scottie Thompson are the only two players who are averaging more than 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists per game.
NLEX - Kiefer Ravena
It is easy to forget about Kiefer Ravena because he is not playing in the court. With JP Erram in the fold, Kiefer has good competition for the top trade asset throne of NLEX. Ginebra has the same type of competition for the title, wherein I chose the big over the guard.
For this one, I chose the guard because there is a difference between the level of play of Kiefer and JP, unlike on the situation of Ginebra wherein they are on the same level. Other than that, the difference in the marketing appeal of the two and the fact that JP seems to be at his peak already, completed my rationale of choosing Kiefer over JP.
