There is no doubt that in the current basketball landscape, the ability to hit three-pointers is the most important. There is no way a team can win a championship if the majority of their players are not capable shooters.
Thus, let us recognized the best shooters for the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup. Being a shooter is not all about efficiency. The volume, the spacing and decision making are also vital to maximize it.
#5 Chris Ross
I think, this is the best three-point shooting conference of Chris Ross and I think history will tell us that it may not happen again. Ross has always been a willing three-point shooter but in this conference, efficiency finally catches up to him. He knocked 48% of his attempts and that has actually made his playmaking even more lethal.
#4 Stanley Pringle
Overall, there is no denying that Stanley is one of the top 3 shooters in the league. For this conference, long bombs remained to be his main weapon, attempting the 6th most in the league. He averaged the fourth most makes per game at 2.6. What makes Stanley great is the fact that he has the most important skill in the game and that is to hit pull-up three-pointers.
#3 JR Quinahan
Although other factors should be considered, efficiency is still the most important thing to look into if we are assessing shooters. For this year's Philippine Cup, JR was the most efficient at 52% (minimum of two attempts per game). Add the fact that he is a center and that will further strengthen the importance of his outside sniping. With his shooting capacity, rim protectors will be out of the paint, shadowing him.
#2 Carl Bryan Cruz
Thanks to a Vic Manuel injury, we finally saw what CBC can do. As expected, he was more of a perimeter player than an inside operator. I think CBC was the best off-ball shooter this conference, showing a consistent ability to hit off-movement threes. His volume was also incredible, averaging the 9th most per game.
#1 Marcio Lassiter
Marcio is the best shooter in the league and I do not think it is even close. Lassiter is the only player in the league who can consistently hit catch-and-shoot, off-movement and pull-up three-pointers. At this point, I do not think there is a player who can come close to his ability to hit pull-up threes. For the conference, Marcio attempted the 2nd most per game, connected the most per game and was the 6th most efficient. What can you expect from the best shooter in the Philippines?
