2019 Com. Cup: Grading the import choices of Magnolia, Phoenix, NorthPort

(c) PBA Media Bureau

Magnolia will play in the game 7 of the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup finals. Win or loss, they will need to move on to the 2019 Commissioner's Cup. On the other hand, two young squads in North Port and Phoenix will try to get to the finals in the upcoming conference.

Who are the imports of those three teams above?

Let us see.

North Port - Prince Ibeh
Ibeh was an NBA G-League veteran, playing 42 total games where he averaged 2.6 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. In his stint in Japan's B-League, he manufactured 4.6 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game.

Ibeh is one of those basketball players that should be called "athletes" because they rely heavily on their athletic gifts in making an impact on the game. Ibeh has freakish athleticism and length but in terms of skills, he lacks a lot. His 16.7% FT is the best evidence for that. If I am going to predict one of the first imports to be replaced, Ibeh will be my guy.
Grade: D

Phoenix - Rob Dozier
After his first two stints with the Alaska Aces, Dozier will try to lead Phoenix Fuel Masters to its first ever Finals appearance. Rob has been a successful import in the PBA, winning a championship with Alaska.

Dozier's calling card is defense. His defense is not only anchored into his physical abilities but also into his positioning, instinct and motor. With him at the middle, Phoenix will have a much dangerous pressure defense. Offensively though, playing him with Justin Chua may not be a good fit because both of them cannot hit three-pointers.
Grade: B

Magnolia - John Fields
The Magnolia-Columbian connection continues as Magnolia will take a former Kia Picanto reinforcement for the Commissioner's Cup. Last year, Field provided the most impressive statline of 29.1 points, 19.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.0 blocks and 60.6% FG per game.

He will not need to produce that much with the Hotshots. He is currently carrying the Singapore Slingers in the on-going ASEAN Basketball Finals. In the ABL, he is averaging 21.8 points, 12.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.6 blocks and 53% FG per game.

Without a three-point shot, fitting him with Ian Sangalang may not be that easy. Although, combining the two will also create some mismatches inside.
