One of them is Mandaluyong that paraded Bobby Ray Parks and his teammates from Alab Pilipinas, last season. Unfortunately, Parks and his compatriots played temporarily and the moment they left, Mandaluyong suffered.
This time, Mandaluyong still wants big name guys but now they are the ones who can complete the season. At the top of their wish list are two former MVPs of Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel of the PBA, Willie Miller and Jayjay Helterbrand.
Miller was the MVP of the PBA in 2002 and 2007, with career averages of 13.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists. Miller is already 41 years old and his last mainstream play was in the ABL, more than three years ago.
With his age, signing Miller could be more of a marketing ploy for Mandaluyong than a real basketball decision.
On the other hand, Helterbrand is older at 42 years old. He was the MVP of the PBA in 2009 and he last played there in the 2017 season.
According to a confirmed report by FoxSports Asia, Jayjay was spotted at the practice of Imus Bandera, which basically means he has more than one MPBL suitor.
In terms of physique, Jayjay may still have what it takes to burn some minutes in a competitive league, although I will not bet a cent that he can lead an MPBL team to victories.
Other than players, a big-time PBA coach will show his wares in the growing regional league. Jong Uichico will now mentor Bataan Risers who will be spearheaded by Jai Reyes.
With nine PBA championships under his belt, Bataan will not lack championship experience for the entirety of the upcoming season.
With big PBA names transferring to MPBL, a big question is looming. Will MPBL compete with the PBA soon?
