Energy, hustle, tenacity and power are four of the top traits that Filipinos want to see from a basketball player. Calvin Abueva has all those traits.
Do you remember the games of our national basketball team that Calvin played?
He was the fan favorite. We cheered him as he did his antics and physical plays against our opponents.
But those antics and physical plays are again in focus after their first two games this 2019 Commissioner's Cup.
First was his off-court confrontation with Maika Rivera, the girlfriend of Bobby Ray Parks. Calvin did not only call the lady a bitch but also made sexual derogatory gestures in front of Maika. In her last statement, Rivera said that she will file a legal complaint.
On the other hand, he hit Terrence Jones with a clothesline with 7:03 left in the game. Allegedly, The Beast just answered back the hit of Jones in his groin.
The worse thing about what Abueva did was, it was intentional. He was heard telling the table officials, before he did what he did, to look out for what he will do to Terrence Jones.
And then after hitting Terrence, he dances like what he did was nothing and will be accepted by the public.
There is a big difference between playing physical and simply hurting your opponent. Knowing that this was not the first time that Calvin hurt his opponents, intentionally, we should expect Calvin to do it again.
Calvin is only 31 years old. He still has a lot of playing years left. So, the risk that he will continue to tarnish the image and the credibility of the PBA will still be there.
And at this point, what is Calvin afraid of doing, inside and outside the court? I will not bet that he cannot surpass what he did in their last two games.
And when he surpassed it, what will PBA do? Is a lifetime ban an option?
