Could Jared Dillinger start a new wave of transactions in the PBA?
One of the culture in the PBA was to make a gentleman's agreement with players that will be relegated to unrestricted free agency. The agreement is to not sign with another team because most of the time, these players are just injured and their roster spot is just being provided for playable bodies.
But, there are some cases where it is more about their performance. And it seems like Larry Fonacier will fall to this category.
According to the website of PBA.ph, Larry was relegated by NLEX in the Unrestricted Free Agency on May 31, 2019. Maybe, other teams just do not have an interest for a 37 years old shooter who was so bad in his first three games of this conference.
He only connected on two field goals, one three-pointer and one two-pointer. This could be the primary reason why coach Yeng Guiao allowed him to fall in the UFA.
Fortunately, he was actually a very good shooter last season. He averaged 1.9 three-pointers per game with 39% efficiency. He also added 11.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.
I do not think Larry is already unplayable. So, which team should try to sign him?
I think Ginebra should show interest. They traded for Jeff Chan who was more of a shooter by reputation, and Larry was more than that. He backed it up with statistics. As of today, out of the four Ginebra players that are averaging more than three three-pointers per game, only Brownlee is hitting better than 20%.
Phoenix Fuel Masters was another team that should ask for Larry. For a team that is not that big, three-point shooting is the best equalizer. They hit pretty well in their first two games but the last conference, they have one of the lowest connection rates.
How about adding an elite shooter for nothing?
