The Alaska fans' frustration with their management is growing by each win or loss that they suffers. It has reached the point that some of their fans are actually wishing for them to lose as much as possible so that their pick for the upcoming draft will get higher.
So, the question that I will try to answer today is, are those Alaska fans, right? Should their favorite team tank?
First, let us look at the standing the last conference. Alaska was eight. Two things should happen then for them to get that coveted #1 pick. First, they need to lose more than NLEX, Columbian, Meralco and Blackwater. Secondly, those four teams should win more than them.
Looking at their current card of 2-2 this conference, I do not think those two things will be accomplished. Thus, I do not think the #1 pick is a possibility.
The good thing is, Blackwater is already winning games and Meralco just got their center. That means Alaska has a chance to sneak in, at least on the top 3. Although, as their 2-2 record suggests, they are not really tanking as what their fanbase is hoping for.
Although, the fanbase should be happy to know that the projected 2019 draft is full of centers that they badly need.
If they end up in the top 5, I believed one legit center will still be available when its time for them to choose. Right now, I do not expect Isaac Go to be available after the top 3 but Troy Rike, the guy who played as small forward in the United States, has a good chance of being there.
Rike is not putting up exciting numbers but the flashes of discipline defense and shooting give him an excellent foundation to be an elite bigman.
Another guy that they may consider is Larry Muyang of Letran Knights. A big body who is also shooting threes already, even though the efficiency is still not there.
Overall, Alaska cannot tank for the #1 pick already but by the looks of it, they will still end up with a center capable of handling the giants of the league as long as they stay in the top 5.
