Why Chris McCullough may not be the right import for SMB

(c) PBA Media Bureau

If you are a Beermen fan, I am pretty sure you are happy with Chris McCullough. The guy is undefeated in the PBA and showcased a versatile skillset. Even his teammates are pretty happy with him.

Chris is averaging 36 points, 13.3 rebounds, 3 assists, 1.3 steals and 2 blocks per game. That is a pretty loaded statline! There is no way the Beermen is losing in the playoffs, right?

Wait a minute. Here is a good question for you. Do the Beermen need a scorer? Chris can accumulate assists and make plays on the defensive end but overall, he is more of an elite scorer. Not that much different from Charles Rhodes.

Now, let me give you some numbers that are telling us that this is more of a fool's gold than anything.

45.6% | 26.3

The guy is taking 26.3 shots per game. That is 28.8% of the shots that the Beermen averaged per game. If you do not look at the numbers, you may see Chris as a super-efficient scorer but actually, he is not. He is only knocking down 45.6% of his shots.

And about his three-point shooting. The guy is knocking down 3.3 long bombs per game at 37% efficiency. That is very good but let me remind you that in his first two international stints, Chris made a total of eight three-pointers with 28.6% efficiency.

25

With their import taking a lot of shots, the local stars of the team should give up a lot of theirs. Chris Ross and Marcio Lassiter are the ones who did that in their last three games. The two combined for 25 shots! They made 10 for 40% efficiency.

Even Terrence Romeo is down to 22 shots in their last three games! He played more than 61 minutes. So, what is happening is, SMB is not maximizing their stars. They are functioning more as role players and not as stars.

This is the biggest red flag. Chris is averaging 6 turnovers per game! That is too much! Currently, the highest average in the conference is 4.9. Chris should reduce that or else, their opponents in the playoffs will exploit it.
