First things first, the PBA made the right decision of acting quickly about what Arwind Santos did. Knowing that game 6 was a day away last Thursday, they cannot let that game play out without any action because the fans may do unthinkable things that could have damaged the league.
Now, if you remember, PBA suspended Calvin last June primarily because of what he did to the girlfriend of Bobby Ray Parks and to Terrence Jones, anchored to the long list of controversies of Calvin.
If you think about it, indefinite suspension is the second worst penalty that a professional league can give to a player, next to a lifetime ban. An indefinite suspension will not allow a player to play in the league until the management of that league lift the ban. The problem here is, that player will not earn his salary.
That means that Arwind Santos may have paid P200,000 but in the case of Calvin, who is earning near-max per month, he may have lost almost a million already.
Now, think about it. Who committed the worse crime? In totality, Abueva committed more and thus deserved a bigger penalty.
By the way, for the PBA to lift the suspension of Calvin, Calvin should show that he has reformed his ways and apologized to the people that he hurt.
Now, how can he showcased that he has reformed his ways? One way is to attend counseling, just like what they are requiring with Arwind.
Yes, they did not require Calvin to to do community service but the fact that Calvin will loss way more money than Arwind will compensate for that.
That means, the suspension will be the biggest difference. Wait, it was not only a suspension but an indefinite one. But the big difference here is, Arwind was not suspended by even a single game.
So, they are telling us that the difference between the crime of Calvin and Arwind equates to an indefinite suspension, the 2nd worst penalty in professional team sports!
Do the PBA really understand the gravity of a racism issue? Maybe they also need to undergo counseling so that they can understand that what Arwind did was not that light in comparison to the all the misdeeds of Calvin!
