2019 PBA Gov. Cup Import Grades: Rain or Shine and Northport chose veterans

The crew of foreign players that will carry the 2019 PBA Governors' Cup is almost complete. We have a lot of returning imports. Some are proven. While some are coming back to prove a point.

Rain or Shine - Joel Wright
In the first try of Joel to the PBA, he was dominant with his 28.4 points, 14.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.9 steals, 1.4 blocks and 51.4% FG per game. Unfortunately, that did not translate to victories. Purefoods ended up with a 2-9 record with him.

I expect him to play the point guard position to maximize his scoring ability. Knowing that Rain or Shine has a lot of shooting bigs, he will be a great pick-and-roll partner for them.

If he can replicate those numbers this conference, Rain or Shine will be on good hands. They need a scoring import because they do not have an established point-producer that can give them 20 points every night. It is also great that Wright has a good defensive pedigree. He should be able to be a good match-up against other imports.
Grade: A

Northport - Mychal Ammons
Northport will once again take an import who doesn't score that much in Ammons. In his first stint in the PBA, Ammons averaged 14.8 points, 12.9 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 54.8% FG per game. Ammons is not much of a shooter. So, the local players are the ones who should space out the floor. He is also not of a playmaker. He will help a lot on rebounding and post-scoring.

Ammons will also be a great defender. I expect him to be capable of shadowing every imports. Overall, Ammons may not be as impactful as Prince Ibeh.
Grade: C
