If you have not check the standings for a while, you could be shocked to see that the two other MVP teams are there at the top. In the first two conference this season, we saw them get eliminated in the elimination round.
The MVP team that took the biggest risk is Meralco because they have traded their 2019 1st round pick. That means they do not get any benefit in losing and failing.
So, their 4-2 start is a much welcome development but the bigger question remains. Is Meralco a legit contender?
Looking at the boxscores of their game, one of the numbers that standout was the points in the paint. Meralco has limited their opponent to 38 points and averaged 44.3 points per game.
The ability to defend the paint is crucial because the elite teams like San Miguel and Ginebra have giants that they will need to limit in the playoffs.
Other than that, Meralco is doing something interesting and that is they have given the playmaking job to wing players like Chris Newsome and Bong Quinto.
By giving it to tall and athletic players like Newsome and Quinto, they have presented a unique problem to the other teams. With their height, Newsome and Quinto can deliver the ball much faster to Allen Durham and Raymond Almazan.
Although, it is still hard to trust them because they do not have that one local guy who is a consistent scoring option. Almazan, Newsome and Amer can do it but will they be able to do it five times out of a five-game series?
Two of those guys should be able to do it if they want to win the crown.
