In a very symbolic standing, the MVP teams are currently the top 3, while the #4 to #6 are all SMC squads. So, TNT, NLEX and Meralco are in their top forms as they try to stop the dominating run of the San Miguel Corporation.
So, let us rank the teams!
#12 Blackwater Elite (Last Rank #9)
The fire-sale has started and according to sources, Allein Maliksi will not be the last one to be given up. At the very least, the Elite will be having a top 3 pick in the upcoming draft.
#11 Alaska Aces (Last Rank #12)
The Aces are suddenly back in the hunt but they still have a big hill to climb. They badly need to increased their output from beyond the arc. They are only averaging 20.8 three-point attempts which is laughable, knowing the importance of it.
#10 Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (Last Rank #5)
After two import switches, I think ROS has failed to find the right guy in Kwame Alexander. His current averages of 18.5 points, 13.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.0 block per game will not do the deal.
#9 Phoenix Fuel Masters (Last Rank #8)
Is Phoenix Fuel Masters too late in bringing Alonzo Gee into the league? Or maybe the better question is, is the import really the problem of the Fuel Masters? I think, they are lacking one more star player to fully push them over the hump.
#8 Northport Batang Pier (Last Rank #7)
The arrival of Christian Standhardinger and Michael Qualls boosted the talent level of this team. Unfortunately, Robert Bolick will not be there to help them in this conference due to an injury.
#7 Columbian Dyip (Last Rank #10)
It seems like CJ Perez will finally get the feeling of the PBA playoffs. At 4-5. they are one win away from securing a spot in the playoffs. Even though they have the weakest roster in the league, the presence of a great import, a great star in CJ Perez and a lot of shooters make the Dyip a credible team in the playoffs.
#6 Meralco Bolts (Last Rank #6)
The Governors' Cup has always been good to the Bolts. With Raymond Almazan finally unlocking the skillset the is equivalent to two 1st round picks, Meralco is looking as strong as ever. But they do not have enough depth in the frontline to make them a better contender than one of the top 5.
#5 Magnolia Hotshots (Last Rank #4)
Should Magnolia make a move? If they want to repeat as the champion, they may need to do so. Especially with the inefficiency of Paul Lee, Mark Barroca and Jio Jallalon. All of them are shooting below 40%.
#4 Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel (Last Rank #3)
It seems like Ginebra will peak in the playoffs. That could be a bad news to their quarterfinals opponent. Nevertheless, the pressure may have positively affected their players.
#3 NLEX Road Warriors (Last Rank #11)
NLEX is playing so well this conference that I see them with the third best chance of getting the crown. The new playing style of Kiefer Ravena has made the team very fluid in their offense. And with Poy Erram and Kenneth Ighalo, NLEX also have a good defensive foundation.
#2 TNT Ka Tropa (Last Rank #2)
At this point, TNT should focus in their playoff position. They should try to make sure that they will not get into the same bracket as San Miguel. Nevertheless, TNT is shooting lights out this conference at 43% from beyond the arc.
#1 San Miguel Beermen (Last Rank #1)
The Beermen will retain the position but with the injury to Dez Wells, Beermen is at risk here. Although, they have proven in the past that they can overcome a twice-to-beat disadvantage, it could be another story if they are facing an MVP team rather than Northport.
