At this start of the season, we should be tackling already a lot of interesting storylines, hyping up each team and the year that will unfold.
Unfortunately, the league, the Philippines and the whole world are facing a much bigger issue than determining which team is the best in basketball.
A lot of international leagues have postponed their season. Actually, the UAAP Volleyball has decided to do it for a week.
So, the PBA is now in the spotlight. Will they follow the trend?
I hope they don't.
First, the biggest reason why leagues are cancelling and postponing their games and activities is to avoid the gathering of a lot of people. And we all know by now that, that could result in a much faster spread of the virus.
Now, that is not that big of a concern for the PBA because their elimination games are not drawing that huge number of people in the past few years. And the attendance of the opening is a good indication that people already are limiting themselves from going into crowded events.
In general, I am against these cancelling and postponement of sports events because it is adding to the hysteria of the situation. And the panic that continues to grow may actually be causing us, the country, more negative than the virus itself.
And even if we apply logic, the cancellation of classes and events may not be that sound. By cancelling these gatherings, the concerned people will still need to find a place to put themselves into. Trust me, the majority of them, the students and the sport-events goers, will not choose to remain at home.
So, the diffused crowding in the events and in the schools will now be distributed into other areas. And mathematically, I do not think the chances of acquiring the virus decreased. As long as people are interacting with other people, the chance is still there. And if each human being's average interaction remains the same, then the overall chance of acquiring the virus remains the same too.
Now, by cancelling events and classes, the worry of the people will increase. That will lead them to be selfish, which will now be detrimental to the overall defence of the country.
What am I talking about? The household right now who have hoarded masks that they cannot actually utilize as a family for more than a month has deprived other people of having one. By depriving those people, they have increased the likelihood of those people of acquiring the virus.
What is ideal is for every Filipino right now to have an available mask. That way, if they have the symptoms, they can at least limit the spread of it with the mask. But because of the panic, that is also taken advantage by business-minded people, those masks are not available to everyone.
Overall though, the key in overcoming this virus is proper hygiene that each one of us can actually do even if we interact with a lot of people.
