As reported by some sites, Greg Slaughter went to America. It was now confirmed because of this most recent post on Instagram.
He was with Chris Ellis, a former Ginebra player himself. Just like Greg, Chris is in his own sabbatical from the PBA. He was traded by Ginebra in 2017 to Blackwater and from that point, we never saw him in the PBA court again.
So, Greg and Chris were teammates for a long time in Ginebra. Together with them was Dalph Panopio, a member of the Batang Gilas squad.
So, what are my takeaways from this siting?
First, if you look at the pictures, both Greg and Chris are in great shape. That means, if Greg returns in the PBA, he will not need time to get back into good physical condition. Actually, he looks much slimmer than the last time we saw him in the Governors' Cup finals.
Second, the fact that he is still willing to play basketball and prepare his body and be better is indicating that the reason for his hiatus from the PBA is not to get away from basketball. In a way, it strengthens the rumblings that the reason why he is doing a sabbatical is to avoid being traded away by Ginebra.
Although, Ginebra should still be happy to see him training to improve his game. The training that he gets in America is way different than what he gets in the Philippines. There could be a chance that he will finally see the best path of development that he should take.
Lastly, Greg could be the key in persuading Chris Ellis to return to the PBA. I am not really sure if his rights is still with Blackwater. Even if it is, I do not think Blackwater will ask that much for a right that they have not taken advantage of.
In short, I am implying that Ginebra has the opportunity to get him back.
The only question is, do they want it?
