The Philippine Basketball Association's return is already on the work after the league passed a request to the Inter-Agency Task Force to allow teams to practice.
That does not mean though that the league will resume playing very soon. The earliest possible return is still around August.
And with that short amount of timeframe, the PBA was clear that they will only play one conference and that will be an All-Filipino Cup.
Other than the timeframe, the risk of that one of those foreign players will bring COVID-19 infection to the league is also real. There is also the possibility that there are not enough imports that are willing to take the risk of coming to the Philippines.
So this year, we will not witness the greatness of Chris McCullough, the import of San Miguel in their 2019 Com. Cup conquest, Allen Durham, Justin Brownlee and etc.
I think the biggest loser of all those reinforcements is Justin Brownlee. At this point, it is pretty clear that Brownlee is the most popular and the most decorated import of this century. He was not only popular and decorated, but the guy also helped Brgy. Ginebra win a championship, every year!
Yes! From 2016 to 2019, Ginebra claimed a crown with Brownlee at the helm. Three of those championships came in the Governors' Cup. Unfortunately for him, his streak will end this year.
Of course, it is not a guarantee that Ginebra and Brownlee will win a championship this year if it is a normal season. But with the injury to Fajardo and with the fact that they have won a championship in the past without Greg Slaughter, it is almost a sure thing.
Unfortunately for them, coronavirus came and life is endangered.
This will be the first season that the league will not have a conference with foreign players.
