In a shocking development, Phoenix Fuel Masters decided to part ways with coach Louie Alas and make coach Topex Robinson as interim head coach.
His son, Kevin Alas, was quick to slam the decision. Although he did not say it directly, he was saying that it was not his dad's fault that Phoenix performed awfully in the last two conferences, last year.
Coach Louie exhibited his class a day after when he said that his position is performance-based and that it was the prerogative of the management.
So, the question then is, was coach Louie a big reason for Phoenix' failing to reach the playoffs in the last two conferences last year?
During those conferences, Calvin Abueva was not there. By the way, when Calvin Abueva was there and even without the presence of any giant, Phoenix ended up with the best record after the elimination round in the Philippine Cup.
And if you think about it, a core of Matthew Wright - Abueva - Alex Mallari - Jason Perkins - Justin Chua doesn't look capable of having the best record when the Beermen, Ginebra, Magnolia and TNT were there with much better rosters.
Actually, I can even argue that their core is not even in the top 6 in the league during that conference. Alaska, Rain or Shine and Northport brought rosters with more firepower behind them.
Other than missing Calvin Abueva, Phoenix also faced a lot of injury problems, not only in their local players but also with their imports.
But at the end of the day, that #1 finished in the 2019 Philippine Cup proved the quality of coach Alas as a coach. While their bad performance in the last two tournaments should not be the reason for firing him because he did not have enough weapons to make things happen.
