The 2021 season of the PBA is scheduled to start by March, 2021. So, it is three months away. So, why am I providing a power ranking this early?
By giving you this power ranking, the movements and decisions that will follow will be better explained as it will have an impact on this power ranking.
#12 Blackwater Elite
They do not have any promising young piece. They even traded their 1st round pick in the upcoming draft that is shaping up to be very deep. In short, they are deserving of this spot.
#11 NLEX Road Warriors
I trust coach Yeng Guiao that he will only need one season to prepare this team to be a contender after adding two quality prospects from the next draft.
#10 Terrafirma Dyip
CJ Perez was once again the scoring champion this year. And even after they added another #1 pick in Roosevelt Adams, they still ended up eliminated in the elimination round. Can another #1 pick finally push them to the playoffs?
#9 Alaska Aces
I think Alaska has accumulated a lot of good and very good players. Barkley Ebona was a good find by the Aces in the draft. I am not sure though if their current core can actually overcome the firepower of the guys at the top.
#8 Meralco Bolts
For the 2nd conference in a row, their playoff life hinged on the health of Raymond Almazan. If they cannot find another starting-caliber center, the Bolts will be a hard bet as a championship contender.
#7 Rain or Shine Elasto Painters
Just like Alaska, Rain or Shine has a lot of very good and good players. The difference is, the Painters have already proven themselves in the playoffs. Although looking at their roster, it seems like they have a lot of aging stars.
#6 Northport Batang Pier
Why am I putting a team that did not end up in the playoffs, in the upper half of this ranking? Because they have Christian Standhardinger and Bolick is returning. Actually, they will add a top prospect too. In short, I did not see their performance in the bubble as the true definition of what this team is.
#5 Magnolia Hotshots
It is hard for me to push Magnolia over the #4 team because of the age of Raffi Reavis and Marc Pingris. Without those two playing at the same level, their frontline rotation will become very shallow. Unless, Aris Dionisio solidify himself as a power forward, capable of partnering with Ian Sangalang.
#4 Phoenix Super LPG
I am buying the hype. The system that coach Topex Robinson is running maximizes the strengths of this team and protect their weaknesses. Although, their future is still shaky because Abueva is still hot in the eyes of the PBA. One mistake, and he could be out again.
#3 TNT Tropang Giga
There is one big question that is shadowing the offseason of TNT. Ray Parks' contract will end before the next season. Is he staying with the team? Or will he push his long-rumored agenda? I hope he returns. Together with Pogoy, they may form a historic tandem that the franchise can be known for.
#2 Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel
There is a reason why coach Tim Cone still wants Greg Slaughter to return. If you watched the Finals closely, you should have seen that there is a good chance that TNT was actually the better team for a majority of the time on the floor. Unfortunately, injuries happened to TNT. That is the reason why I cannot put Ginebra at the top.
#1 San Miguel Beermen
Actually, even if Arwind Santos and Alex Cabagnot decided to retire before the season, I could be choosing Beermen still as the #1 team because of the return of June Mar Fajardo. The Fajardo - Tautuaa tandem is currently the lone gigantic elite duo in the league. And in the Philippine Cup, size with impact is the most important thing.
