We are two months away from welcoming a class that has the potential to be a historic one. As of today, if Brickman, Malonzo and Munzon will not have a problem joining the draft, I am very confident that all of them will end up as top 15 PBA players for several years.
One idea that was again pushed for this year is the Gilas draft. The idea is to give much better control in developing and using these Gilas draftees.
Last 2019, they did it by giving the top 5 picks, essentially another top 5 picks. I was actually shocked that this was accepted by the PBA board.
Now that SBP has revealed that they are now looking to send back one or several of the Gilas draftees this year, it seems like those teams were really just gifted with additional picks.
If that is the case then, then repeating the 2019 Gilas draft is a very bad idea. Especially with the fact that only Rain or Shine is considered by many as an independent team in the top 5.
For me, the best path is to just conduct a regular draft but the players who will participate in the Gilas draft will carry with them the contract of serving in Gilas. That means they cannot play right away for the team that drafted them.
So, what will happen is that this Gilas commitment will now be part of the consideration in making choices during the draft.
By doing this, no team will just be gifted with an additional chance of picking a very good prospect.
