Asked your grandfather or father about how popular the PBA was back in the 80s and the 90s. During those times, the PBA games were fighting against popular dramas on popular channels.
Like, almost old Pinoys today are familiar with the Crispa-Toyota rivalry.
And then controversies eroded the league. From popular teams quitting, up to Foreigners finding their ways into the oldest professional basketball tournament in Asia.
So now, the league is now craving for more eyeballs. It has reached the point where NBA was even much more popular than the local league itself.
Why?
The common reason for the lapsed fans, the ones who were diehards before but now they are not watching, is the parity of the league is so bad now.
The issue of parity is again at the center today, as the league decides the fate of the CJ Perez to San Miguel deal.
If this is accepted in any form, other than a fair trade, those lapsed fans will continue to puke at the idea of viewing PBA games again. Actually, we can expect the fans who are still clinging for a change, to just let go of their hope and be part of those lapsed fans.
But what if the PBA trade committee, created by Kume Marcial will finally stand its ground and reject the trade?
Actually, Mr. Marcial can do even better by vetoing the trade and send a message to the public that the PBA now will do their best to maintain parity in the league. That they will not simply allow superstars to be swapped for bench players.
That the league wants to change for the better!
Or maybe, he will just be the next Narvasa.
