PBA Analysis: PBA should add teams because of Terrafirma and Blackwater

While others are pointing to Terrafirma and Blackwater as the reason why the PBA should not expand, I actually think that they have given us reasons why the league should add teams.

So, here are my reasons for wanting additional teams.

1. There is a good chance that the PBA will add Independent teams
People are worried that additional teams will just turn out to be farm teams just like Terrafirma and Blackwater. That will be hard to believe so. The fact is, maintaining Terrafirma and Blackwater as farm teams is not really that cheap. It is worth it but I do believe that in terms of Cost-Benefit Analysis, the SMC and the MVP group can only max around two farm teams. It means that if they add more farm teams, the cost will already be higher than the benefit that they will get.

So, I am confident that if the league opens up its door for new entrants. Those companies will be serious about contention as the conglomerates will already say no for additional teams to maintain.

2. Discovery of talents
Think about it. Without the expansion of Terrafirma and Blackwater, we may have never found out that JP Erram is one of the top centers in the league. That Rashawn McCarthy can be a starting-caliber guard. That Jackson Corpuz can play. That Brian Heruela can have a spot in the league. And many more.

3. Parity
People think that it is hard to build up a championship core in the league. But the reality is, two to three years of losing is already enough to have that core to build around.

Think about Blackwater. By 2018, they already have Mac Belo and JP Erram. Three legit starting-caliber players. By 2019, they could have had a scary trio of Parks-Belo-Tratter.

Terrafirma has the same case. The young core of CJ Perez-McCarthy-Adams-Corpuz was already looking promising that a serious franchise could have easily built a playoff contender out of that.

Knowing that new teams will surely suffer in their early years. It means that they will be grabbing a lot of the magnificent talent that will enter the league in the next few years.

I hope independent companies out there will realize that there are a lot of amateur players who can be great marketing assets for them because of having a huge social media following. I am talking about Ricci Rivero, Juan Gomez de Liano, Kobe Paras and Thirdy Ravena. And they will enter the league in the next two to three drafts.
