During these times where lopsided trades are rampant. I am pretty sure the PBA universe is having a hard time accepting any accepted trade.
So, we have a big one here.
Phoenix trade: Calvin Abueva, #10 Pick
Magnolia trade: Chris Banchero, #6 Pick, #18 Pick
Of course, there is a clear difference between the value of Abueva and Banchero. So, the thing that we should decide if it is fair is, is the difference between an Abueva and Banchero equates to an upgrade from #10 to #6 plus the #18 pick?
Abueva has produced 15.4 points, 11.3 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 1.7 steals, 46% FG and 29% 3FG per game. It is clear as day that Abueva was a top 10 player in the bubble. He was actually a candidate for the MVP.
On the other hand, Banchero averaged 10.8 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 40% FG and 23.3% 3FG per game. He is clearly a starting-level guard. Defensively, he is fine and will not be a problem in the playoffs because of his size.
So, in a general point of view, is the difference between an MVP candidate who is a forward and a starting caliber guard, equals to an improvement from the #10 pick to #6 with the #18 pick?
I think the answer is no. There are only a few MVP candidates in the league. They are basically the ones that determine if a team is a contender or not. Starting caliber guards are easy to find in the league.
The rise from #10 to #6, in a general sense, is not that big because most of the draft picks from #6 to #10 are interchangeable.
For this specific draft, I think it matters more because I can see around eight very good prospects and now that they are at #6, they can now get one of them.
Nevertheless, even if you add the #18 pick, it is not equitable.
So, the trade is not fair?
Not yet.
We also need to consider the fact that Abueva brings a lot of baggage to Magnolia. And the fact is, his professional license is still not 100% safe. GAB is still monitoring him. One mistake and he could be back on the shelves again.
So, if we consider that, we need to nerf his value by around 30%, at the very least.
And if we do that, the trade becomes a clear fair trade.
Actually, if we consider that Calvin is already 33 and Banchero is 30, Phoenix is looking like the winner here.
