PBA Analysis: Is Greg Slaughter a 'good player who just needs a good break'?

Trading Christian Standhardinger for Greg Slaughter alone, is a very bad trade. People who live and breathe basketball know that Standhardinger is a way better player.

That doesn't mean though that I will just discount the opportunity of Greg Slaughter to showcase what he is really made of.

Coach Pido Jarencio was tasked to defend the trade at all costs. His points were very weak. But, he does bring out a good question, was Greg never given enough break in Ginebra?

He played six seasons with Ginebra. For two seasons, he was given 30+ minutes per game. What was amazing about those two seasons was, those ended up as the years where he put up his two highest field-goal percentages!

It is very ironic because of course, more playing time means more fatigue and more opportunity to miss shots.

In terms of usage rate, Greg lowest usage rate was 20.3 and his highest was 24.6. Usage rate basically tells us the portion of offensive possession that ended up with that player.

Now, June Mar Fajardo was basically in the same range. But the difference in production is huge. So, combining the two points above, I think, it is correct to say that he was not given enough break.

The reality also is that Greg was a very fine player during his tenure with Ginebra. Unfortunately, the PBA universe expected more because he is the biggest player in the league.

Fortunately for him, he has this one opportunity to show us that he can be more than a what if.
