One of the most heated debates in the kingdom of San Miguel Corporation in the PBA is about favoritism by the top management.
In one of the interviews of the big boss of the corporation, Mr. Ramon S. Ang, he said that they never sacrifice teams. That they will never grab all the good players just to put it in one of their three official franchises. Yes, they have unofficial ones.
We did saw the three teams grab a superstar each, this offseason. The Beermen grabbed the back-to-back scoring champ, CJ Perez. Ginebra went to replace Greg Slaughter with Christian Standhardinger. And Magnolia provided a package for Calvin Abueva.
So, there was no favoritism, right?
Maybe, there is no favoritism, but it is pretty obvious that one of those teams is having a hard time getting star talents.
Out of the three trades stated above, only one was traded with an independent team. Yes, that was the Calvin Abueva trade.
And because they traded with an independent team, only Magnolia gave up a package that is fair for the value of the superstar.
On the other hand, San Miguel grabbed CJ for a late 1st and players from their bench. And Ginebra, basically received Standhardinger for free.
Maybe no favoritism, but evidence are pointing to Ginebra as the team that is having the easiest time, building up their talent level.
