As expected, the PBA denied Kiefer Ravena of transferring to a higher level of basketball. They of course used the contract as an excuse.
To be clear, they are technically right. They have all the power to stop Kiefer Ravena from fulfilling his desires of playing in the Japan B League.
Kiefer should have not signed that contract, right?
The reality is, in the world of professional basketball, contracts are meant to be bought. It is not because of power-grabbing by the more prominent league but it is because we are talking about sports here.
Sports is about competition. And innate to competition are different levels of leagues. Thus, if a player is recognized by a much higher league that he deserves to play there, by the spirit of sports, the lower league should be let go.
And a contract buyout will happen. The higher league will pay for the cancellation of the contract of the player to the lower league.
This is happening in different leagues in the entire world. And when this was asked to the Chairman of the PBA board, he cannot even provide a direct answer why they do not want to undergo the process.
Nevertheless, let me just remind them about one thing. Remember Kai Sotto?
He signed a multi-year contract with Adelaide 36ers of NBL. So, what happens if he can prove himself in the upcoming season, and be drafted in the NBA next year?
The NBA team will buy out his contract with Adelaide, for him to level up to the NBA. And NBL is more than willing to do that. As I have said, almost all of the top non-NBA leagues, allow it.
The PBA better shut their mouth if that happens next year.
Why?
Because the process that they do not want to apply could also be the process that will help Kai Sotto reached the NBA.
Yes. A process that can help improve the quality of Philippine basketball.
you nailed it
