The problem is, the moment the news came out, commissioner Willie Marcial told the media that Kiefer cannot play for Japan B League because of his live contract with the NLEX Road Warriors.
When asked if he will be allowed to go to Japan if NLEX allows him, the Commissioner did not give a direct answer. He reiterated though that his contract was not only with NLEX but also with the PBA.
The way the Commissioner told the media, felt like the PBA board will not be happy with the decision of Kiefer Ravena.
The Uniform Player Contract that is integrated into the contract of Kiefer basically connects Kiefer to the league also.
Meaning, the PBA should also release him to be allowed to play. Actually, Kiefer also needs to get the green light from FIBA.
For Kume Marcial to say that "hindi pwede" means they will not allow him. The reality is, the rule does not allow players to play in the International league.
They can do that but for them to play in that International league, they need a release from the PBA. In short, PBA has all the powers to allow Kiefer to go to Japan.
By the way, the commissioner answered questions, it seems like they will not let him loose.
And that will be a big blow to Philippine basketball. For Philippine basketball to grow, our local players should explore International leagues.
And you know what is the #1 reason why? It is because the PBA does not want to grow. They are already contented hoarding Pinoy talents.
