For more than two decades now, the PBA is being dominated by the San Miguel Corporation teams; San Miguel Beermen, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and Magnolia Hotshots.
Out of those three teams though, only one franchise managed to complete a grand slam. Yes, I am talking about San Mig Coffee Mixers.
Before San Mig though, we have the Alaska Aces. Alaska did it even though they are abiding by all the rules in the PBA.
Now that Alaska is having a financial crunch, do they still have a path for another grand slam?
Lucky for them, they do. What is that path?
It is called tanking. If you are not familiar with the term, it is basically a way wherein basketball franchises chose to get many high draft picks as possible.
Take note though that this is not similar to what Terrafirma Dyip and Blackwater Elite are doing. These two teams wanted high picks to sell them to the conglomerates.
What Alaska will do is to make the correct picks and build around the guys that they will draft. Right now, they already have a good young squad, just waiting for their leaders.
Currently, Alaska will have two first round picks in the upcoming draft. Both picks are currently inside the top 5.
And if the upcoming draft is as deep as expected, Alaska could be very near to that next grandslam.
