Orlando Johnson is a consummate professional. He worked his ass off for the few games that San Miguel gave him even though SMB brought the import that will replace him as he played those few games.
Before Orlando left the country, he gave a very juicy opinion for us to unpack. He said that Simon Enciso is one of the best guards in the PBA. And then states why is he on SMB if they will not use him?
I am not in full agreement with the first statement. When you say that he is one of the best guards in the PBA, you are talking about him being a top 10 guard.
There is no way that Simon Enciso is a top 10 guard in the league. I will not even debate that he is a top 20 guard.
Nevertheless, OJ pointed out a very interesting point. Especially if we add the fact that SMB just added Jericho Cruz through free agency.
So, why is SMB doing this?
Because this is the way of San Miguel under coach Leo Austria. They gathered talented players for two reasons. #1, they can use them for trades. #2 the coaching philosophy of coach Leo is to overwhelm the opponent of their talent level.
Imagine, they went to grab the best scorer possible as an import even though they already have the two previous scoring champions in CJ Perez and Terrence Romeo.
What is very interesting though will be the move of the management of SMB if they fail to win the crown again.
