One of the biggest questions when the name of Converge was revealed as an aspirant for the PBA franchise of the Alaska Aces was the potential move by the TNT franchise of not letting them in.
As per the current rules and regulations of the PBA, TNT has that right. In the past, we are all aware with the move of the SMC group of changing their youngest franchise into Magnolia to avoid the entry of Chooks to Go, an indirect competitor.
Now, we are all shocked that the MVP group was quick to decide that they will not be a roadblock to the desire of Converge.
And because of this swift action, fans and some analysts were whispering about a potential payment from Converge, to return the favor.
Low and behold, their first ever trade as a PBA franchise was with an MVP team, NLEX Road Warriors. Converge will send their 1st round pick in the next draft.
For this to have a high likelihood as a return of favor by Converge, it should be an unfair trade, right?
I do not think it is unfair. You can conclude that it is unfair if you think that Converge's pick will again end up in the top 4 of the next draft.
That is unlikely now with the addition of two quality bigmen and knowing that Converge has the financial capacity to get top tier imports for two of the three tournaments this upcoming season.
So, for me, I see that pick to be ranging from #5 to #9. Let us go to the middle and assume that it will be the #7 pick of the upcoming draft.
Remember that Tyrus Hill was the seventh pick of this draft. So, the path for NLEX to win this trade is for the upcoming draft to be a much deeper one that this year.
Even with the high number of top tier potential entrants in the upcoming, it is hard to assume now that we will see a historically deep draft because the International leagues may have just overtaken the PBA to become the top option for our young ballers.
So for me, this is a fair trade and not a payment to the MVP group.
