There is no question that Justine Baltazar was the most awaited prospect for this 2022 PBA draft. That is because people expected Thirdy Ravena, Kobe Paras and Dwight Ramos to pass this year.
Before the bigman of Pampanga declares, Snow Badua dropped a trade rumor bomb involving Converge Fiber Xers and Blackwater Elite.
According to the rumor, Converge is willing to give up their #3 and #4 pick, just to grab the #1 pick and take Justine.
The desire to get Justine by Converge is understandable because he is from Pampanga. Just like the owner of Converge, Dennis A. Uy.
I am not sure though if it is worth giving up the #3 and #4 pick. Assuming that Sedrick Barefield will be the pick at #2, Converge can end up with Jeremiah Gray and Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser.
I think, the combination of Gray and Brandon is better than taking Baltazar alone. There is a good argument that the potentials of Gray and Brandon are comparable to that of Baltazar.
So, basketball-wise, I do not think this is a good move by Converge. I also question the legality of this potential trade because #1 picks cannot be traded.
Unless the commissioner will come up with an excuse, I expect the fans to hate this just because of it being a violation of a rule.
If Converge badly wants Baltazar because of the marketing aspect, I hope they will ask for the #13 pick also and maybe another 2nd round pick.
