From Greg Slaughter to Javee Mocon and now Matthew Wright. The PBA teams continue to work around this very hard problem of salary with the rise in pressure from International league.
As early as February, we have been aware that the management of Phoenix and Wright are not meeting eye-to-eye with their contract negotiation.
According to Snow Badua, the current offer is around P800,000, yes way above the maximum salary. But Wright is countering to have a salary of around P1,000,000.
According to Snow, majority of the superstars of the San Miguel Corp. is in that range. So, I think it is reasonable that Wright should also get it.
Now, the question is, should Phoenix retain him or trade him?
If we consider everything I think retaining him is their best path. I am wondering why they cannot reach the desire of Matthew when a maximum player in Chris Banchero just left their team.
One thing though that they should fight for is to push the contract to be two years.
That way they will avoid the Unrestricted Free Agency of Wright next year.
The primary reasons why they should keep him this year at all cost is the reality that they may have a much better team this year with Sean Anthony debuting after his injury.
And the potential damage to the image of their franchise could be immense. A trade with San Miguel Corp. Team will surely push the fans to brand them as a farm team of the conglomerate group.
